Emotional Parentification
You became a parent’s confidant, comforter, or referee. Their moods set the temperature in the house, and you learned to read the room before you learned to read your own needs.
You were the responsible one for a long time. You can put some of it down.
Parentification happens when a child takes on adult roles in the family, whether that’s caring for siblings, managing a parent’s emotions, or keeping the household from falling apart. Melissa Lou Koerner, LCSW, helps adults in Venice, FL, and by telehealth understand those roles and reclaim space in their own lives.
You became a parent’s confidant, comforter, or referee. Their moods set the temperature in the house, and you learned to read the room before you learned to read your own needs.
You cooked, cleaned, paid attention to bills, or raised younger siblings. It looked like maturity from the outside. On the inside, it often felt like there was no one to lean on.
Now you may be caring for aging parents, or still being called on to fix every crisis. Years of over-functioning and people-pleasing leave a mark. This is a space to rest and reclaim your sense of self.
Lou draws on family systems, attachment work, Internal Family Systems, and trauma-informed care. Together you’ll make sense of the role reversal you grew up with, grieve what you didn’t get, practice boundaries that don’t require cutting anyone off, and build an identity that’s fully your own.
Many people working on parentification also explore enmeshment and estrangement. Both are part of Lou’s family-of-origin specialty.
